London, UK: After a few whirlwind days in British politics, the new UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced his new Cabinet.
While more than a third of Liz Truss’s Cabinet was changed, several seasoned ministers such as Michael Gove have been reinstated to lead important departments.
Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor
Jeremy Hunt was reappointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer as the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assigned him the crucial task of laying out a strategy to restore stability to Britain’s public finances. Following the catastrophic mini-Budget, he took over Kwasi Kwarteng’s position and proceeded to repeal the majority of the new regulations.
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the Commons
Ms. Mordaunt, who ran in both of the Tory leadership contests this year, would have preferred to be promoted; nonetheless, she remains in her current position. On September 6, 2022, Penny Mordaunt was named Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House.
John Glen, Chief Secretary to the Treasury
John Glen served as the Treasury’s economic secretary from September 2021 until July 2022. Between 17 September 2021 and 6 July 2022, he served as the Treasury’s Minister of State (Economic Secretary).
Oliver Dowden, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster
Oliver Dowden CBE was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The incumbent of the position, which has administrative responsibilities for the Duchy of Lancaster’s estates and rents, is the second-most senior minister in the Cabinet after the Prime Minister.
Dominic Raab, Justice Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister
Dominic Raab was appointed Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. He previously held the same role between 15 September 2021 and 6 September 2022.
Simon Hart, Chief Whip
Simon Hart was named as the Treasury’s Parliamentary Secretary (Chief Whip). Prior to that, he served as Secretary of State for Wales between 16 December 2019 and 6 July 2022.
James Cleverly, Foreign Secretary
The position of Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs was given to James Cleverly. From July 2022 to September 2022, James served as secretary of state for education.
Ben Wallace, Defence Secretary
Mr. Wallace maintained the post throughout the COVID-19 lockdowns because he was initially assigned to the office on July 24, 2019. The department’s operations are under the overall control of the Secretary of State for Defense.
Gavin Williamson, Minister of State (Minister without Portfolio) in the Cabinet Office
The new minister of state in the Cabinet Office will be Gavin Williamson. Prior to July 2019, he served as secretary of state for education until September 2021.
Suella Braverman, Home Secretary
Six days after her exit for a security breach, Suella Braverman has been reinstated in her position as Home Secretary.
Michelle Donelan, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
The position of Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport was given to Michelle Donelan. From July 5 until July 7, 2022, she served as secretary of state for education. For the period of 15 September 2021 to July 2022, she served as Minister of State for Higher and Further Education.
Grant Shapps, Business Secretary
The position of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy has been bestowed upon Grant Shapps. Prior to this, he served as Secretary of State for the Transport Department from 24 July 2019 to 6 September 2022 and Secretary of State for the Home Department from 19 October 2022 to 25 October 2022.
Lord True CBE, Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords
Lord True was appointed Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Lords. Between 14 February 2020 and 6 September 2022, he served as the Cabinet Office’s Minister of State.
Victoria Prentis, Attorney General
The Attorney General of England and Wales and the Advocate General for Northern Ireland have been named by the Prime Minister as Victoria Prentis. The Government Legal Department, HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate, Crown Prosecution Service, and Serious Fraud Office are all under the supervision of the Attorney General.
Gillian Keegan, Education Secretary
The position of Secretary of State for Education was given to Gillian Keegan. From 7 September 2022 to 25 October 2022, she served as the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.
Jeremy Quin, Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office
He was previously Minister of State (Minister for Crime, Policing and Fire) at the Home Office between 7 September 2022 and 25 October 2022.
Michael Gove, Levelling Up Secretary
Michael Gove was appointed Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations.
He was previously Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities between 15 September 2021 and 6 July 2022, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from July 2019 to September 2021, and Minister for the Cabinet Office from February 2020 to September 2021.
Kemi Badenoch, International Trade Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities
Kemi Badenoch has been reappointed as the Board of Trade president and as secretary of state for foreign trade. According to Downing Street, she will also assume the role of Minister for Women and Equalities.
Mark Harper, Transport Secretary
The new secretary of transport is Mark Harper. He previously served as a chief whip from May 2015 to July 2016 and as minister for people with disabilities from July 2014 to May 2015.
Chris Heaton-Harris, Northern Ireland Secretary
Chris Heaton-Harris was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. He was previously Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury (Chief Whip) from 8 February 2022 to 6 September 2022.
Alister Jack, Scotland Secretary
Alister Jack, MP, has been reappointed as secretary of state for Scotland. Alister Jack was appointed Secretary of State for Scotland. He was formerly a Government Whip and the Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury.
David TC Davies, Wales Secretary
David T C Davies was appointed Secretary of State for Wales. He was the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales between December 2019 and October 2022.
Robert Jenrick, Minister of State (Minister for Immigration) in the Home Office
Robert Jenrick was appointed Minister of State (Minister for Immigration) at the Home Office. He was previously Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care between 7 September 2022 and 25 October 2022.
