New York: A tragic mass shooting at a Manhattan skyscraper has claimed the lives of 5 individuals, including the attacker, and left one more critically wounded. The building, located at 345 Park Avenue, houses major corporate offices including the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), Blackstone, and KPMG.
According to New York City officials, the gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, was armed with an assault-style rifle.
Tamura opened fire in the skyscraper’s lobby during the evening rush hour before moving to the 33rd floor, where he continued shooting. Authorities stated that Tamura ended the incident by fatally shooting himself in the chest.
Among the victims of the mass shooting was a 36-year-old NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, who had immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh. Didarul was working under a city programme that allows officers to serve as private security detail for commercial premises. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, had served the police force for more than three years.

Three other victims, two men and one woman, were also killed in the mass shooting at the Manhattan skyscraper. Their identities have not yet been released. A fifth victim, a man, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters that, Tamura had a known history of mental illness and had travelled cross-country from Las Vegas to New York in recent days. Investigators believe Tamura acted alone, though the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Authorities confirmed that the gunman had no significant criminal background according to preliminary investigations. A photograph captured by police and circulated in media showed the suspect walking into the skyscraper carrying a rifle.
The mass shooting has raised renewed concerns about gun violence and building security in major urban centres. Officials have stated that security procedures in high-traffic commercial buildings will be reviewed in the coming days.
