Lunchables fails to gain traction in schools, Kraft Heinz pauses programme

In April, Consumer Reports flagged high sodium in school Lunchables, sparking debate on their suitability for kids.

New York: Kraft Heinz has pulled its popular Lunchables product line from US schools participating in the federal free and reduced-price meal programme, citing lower-than-expected demand.

The setback affects one of Kraft Heinz’s most recognisable brands as the company continues to seek ways to revitalise its legacy products.

The Chicago-based food manufacturer had announced early in 2023 its plans to enter the $25 billion educational food market, with hopes of providing ready-to-eat meal kits for students nationwide. However, demand for Lunchables in schools fell short of projections, Kraft Heinz disclosed.

Kraft Heinz viewed the initiative as an opportunity to expand its market reach and grow sales of its long-established brands, including Lunchables, Jell-O, and Crystal Light, which have struggled to maintain momentum amid rising prices.

The company faced an additional challenge in April when Consumer Reports criticised the school-oriented Lunchables for their high sodium content, sparking debate about their suitability for young children. Nevertheless, Kraft Heinz reassured consumers stating that, “All Lunchables products are safe and made with quality ingredients that meet our own high standards as well as strict safety standards set by government agencies.”

Originally developed in the 1980s to cater to busy families, Lunchables has seen multiple reinventions over the years. In 2019, Kraft Heinz introduced “Brunchables,” and last year added fresh fruits like apples and grapes to diversify the meal kit options.

Adding to the brand’s challenges, one of the company’s suppliers could no longer provide a key ingredient for a top-selling Lunchables variety. The company is reportedly working on further revamping the brand, including exploring new flavours like spicy nacho, to regain market traction.

Lunchables now faces rising competition, most notably from YouTube personality Mr. Beast’s new lunch kit, Lunchly, which has quickly gained attention. However, consumer complaints about quality issues, including mould, have impacted the launch of this new rival.
