United Kingdom: Labour has made its biggest advance in a by-election since 1994 after overturning a majority of more than 18,000 in Wellingborough. According to reports, the prediction of a landslide victory for the party in the next general election is getting stronger.
Labour’s candidate, Gen Kitchen, has won the election with 13,844 votes, which is a significant win over the Conservative’s Helen Harrison who received 7,408 votes. This was the largest swing from the Tories to Labour since 1994 and the second-largest since the Second World War. This by-election marks Labour’s fifth gain from the Conservatives in this parliament.
Additionally, the party also won a Tory seat in Kingswood, which is a double blow to an embattled Conservative party. The Conservative party has lost 10 byelections in a single parliament, which is more than any government since the 1960s.
In the recent byelections in England, the Labour Party achieved its largest swing since 1994 with a 28.5 percent increase in votes. The voter turnout in Wellingborough was 38.1 percent and in Kingswood, it was 37.1 percent, which are lower figures compared to other recent by-elections. However, Tamworth, Somerton and Frome recorded even lower turnouts. In contrast, contests in Uxbridge, Selby and Ainsty, and Mid Bedfordshire saw figures in the mid-40s.
After her victory, Kitchen said that, “The people of Wellingborough have spoken for Britain. This is a stunning victory for the Labour party and must send a message from Northamptonshire to Downing Street.”
Harrison appeared at the counter two hours before the results were announced. She was in high spirits, posing for photographs and stated that she was feeling “good”. She appeared on good terms with Reform UK, at one point calling out the party’s leader, Richard Tice.
After the results were announced, Harrison huddled with cameras as she left the counting hall, refusing to say whether her loss was Sunak’s fault, instead saying she was “disappointed.” She said she would “absolutely” run again before complaining that she couldn’t see because of the camera lights shining in her face. A car was waiting for Harrison outside the venue, and she sped in as supporters grabbed her to applaud her before the car sped away.
Reform UK has achieved its best result in an election so far. Ben Habib, the party’s candidate for Wellingborough, said that “the world is our oyster” and said the result was a staging post for the party’s growth.
“I’m not into being a weathervane for the Conservative party. I’m not in it to make sure we get minor policy adjustments which suit our view of life. We need a 180-degree handbrake U-turn from the policy direction that the Conservative party has taken and that Labour will frankly continue,” Habib added.
The Wellingborough by-election was triggered by voters recalling former Tory MP Peter Bone after he received a six-week suspension from the Commons after an investigation found he had subjected a staff member to bullying and sexual abuse.
He won the Northamptonshire constituency at every general election from 2005 to 2019, with Labor coming second in four of the five contests, and Ukip doing so in 2015. In 2019, his majority was 36 percent. Bone did not attend Thursday night’s count.
According to reports, further controversy arose after Bone’s partner, Harrison, was selected as the Conservative candidate. High-level Tory MPs were absent from the constituency and not a single frontbencher endorsed Harrison. Last month, Rishi Sunak skipped out on an opportunity to acknowledge her after being asked if she was proud to have chosen her given her relationship with Bone. He said that the candidate should be chosen by the local members. Harrison remained steadfast in the run-up to the by-election. She declined all national media interviews and has not posted on social media platform X since January 11 after announcing her election.
Despite his most challenging week since becoming Labor leader, Keir Starmer will welcome the results after two of the party’s parliamentary candidates were suspended within 24 hours over comments about Israel. In a Savannah poll, Labour has lost seven points to the Conservatives since June 2023.
In spite of public support for the policy and warnings from business leaders to maintain it, Starmer formally dropped his flagship target of spending £28 billion a year on green investments, citing poor economic conditions.
Labour last held Wellingborough between 1997 and 2005, losing it to Bone in that year’s general election. When Tony Blair was in power, Wellingborough was a swing seat. In 1997, Labour won by 187 votes, but in 2005, it lost by 687. The constituency has been a Tory stronghold in recent years, with a Conservative majority of 18,540 in the 2019 election.
Based on reports, If the Conservatives lose another safe seat, it could prompt some of the party’s backbenchers on the right to attempt to replace Sunak as leader before the next general election. These attempts could be long-shot considering the current divisions within the party over the Rwanda bill.
