Ukraine: Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate President Mr. Vladimir Putin through a drone strike on the Kremlin that allegedly occurred overnight on 3rd May 2023. The accusation, which is viewed as an extraordinary and serious allegation, has been strongly refuted by officials in Kyiv. The incident has further strained tensions between the two nations, which have been at odds over a range of issues since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
According to the Kremlin, an attempted drone attack on the official residence of Mr. Vladimir Putin was thwarted and the drones were destroyed. Footage that circulated on social media showed a bright flash and a puff of smoke near the Kremlin, which is widely regarded as the most powerful symbol of political authority in Moscow.
The incident has heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which have been engaged in a long-standing conflict since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The allegation of an attempted assassination of the Russian President marks a new level of hostility between the two countries.
In a statement, the Kremlin said it regarded the alleged attack as terrorism and a deliberate attempt on Putin’s life. “Russia reserves the right to take retaliatory measures where and when it sees fit,” it added. US officials have confirmed that they are in the process of evaluating the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin and have not yet determined who may be responsible.
The admission of a potential security breach at the heart of the Russian government has drawn significant attention, regardless of the validity of the accusation. The incident has further escalated tensions between Russia and Ukraine, who have long been engaged in a bitter conflict since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
