Los Angeles: The animated musical KPop Demon Hunters has climbed Netflix’s charts to become the platform’s most-viewed movie ever. Since its release in June, the film has been streamed over 236 million times, surpassing the action-comedy Red Notice to claim the top spot.
The film has also achieved remarkable success in music, with songs from its soundtrack becoming some of the most-streamed globally on Spotify. The track Golden reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this month, marking one of several chart-topping accomplishments for the movie.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters follows the fictional K-pop girl group Huntr/x, whose three members use their music and fighting skills to protect humans from demons.

Despite a relatively low-key premiere at Netflix’s Tudum theatre in Los Angeles in June, KPop Demon Hunters gained momentum over the summer through word-of-mouth, viral videos, and social media memes.
Audiences and critics have praised the film for its striking animation and its portrayal of both traditional and modern Korean culture. However, the most significant appeal for many has been the catchy K-pop songs, crafted by producers and songwriters with experience working with top K-pop acts such as BTS and Twice.
Maggie Kang, the Korean-Canadian co-director, noted that the team aimed for music that would ‘really speak to K-pop fans’ and authentically fit within the K-pop genre.

Leveraging the soundtrack’s popularity, Netflix released a sing-along version in cinemas across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand last weekend, resulting in Netflix’s first number-one film at the US box office. The sing-along version has since been made available worldwide on the streaming platform.
Several songs from the soundtrack have entered Spotify’s global Top 10, with Golden continuing at number one. Another track, Your Idol by Saja Boys, the fictional arch rivals of Huntr/x, has also topped the US Spotify chart. These achievements made Huntr/x and Saja Boys the highest-charting female and male K-pop groups in US Spotify history, surpassing real-life stars BTS and Blackpink.
The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack has also become the first to feature four simultaneous Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Early discussions about a sequel are reportedly underway.
