United States: Vice President Kamala Harris has released her medical records, ensuring she is in “excellent health” and fit to perform as president. Following the revelation, Harris indicted her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, of lacking clarity in not releasing his health records, further doubting his fitness for office.
In a statement, Harris said that, “He doesn’t desire the American people to notice whether or not he’s fit to become president.” Trump’s team reacted without disclosing his medical history, quoting his doctor, who conveyed the former president as being in “perfect and excellent health.”
The exchange arrives after the White House published a report stating Harris “possesses the physical and mental resilience” to serve as president. Her physician, Dr. Joshua Simmons, reported that her most recent physical was “unremarkable,” adding that she conducts a healthy and active lifestyle. Dr. Joshua recognised her family history of colon cancer and noted that she manages her allergies while adhering to advised preventative care.
A Harris campaign spokesperson later challenged Trump on social media, saying that, “Your turn, Donald Trump.” Meanwhile, Harris has tossed doubt on Trump’s mental acuity, referencing his tendency to “go off on tangents.”
The Democratic Party has raised scrutiny of Trump’s age and mental fitness, reflecting concerns Republicans raised about President Joe Biden before his exit from the race. Trump, at 78, would be the most senior president to serve if re-elected, a record Biden will bear when he steps down in January.
Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, responded to the pressure by citing updates from Trump’s physician, who treated him following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania earlier this year. Cheung restated that Trump’s physical and cognitive exams were “well within the normal range” and “exceptional.”
Although national polls show Harris with a slight lead over Trump, the race remains highly competitive, especially in key battleground states.
