Jerusalem: Five people were killed in a shooting at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem, Israel’s ambulance service reported. Israeli police confirmed that the two perpetrators had been killed at the scene.
The identities of the attackers and their motive remain unclear. Palestinian militant group Hamas praised two Palestinian ‘resistance fighters,’ who it said carried out the attack but stopped short of claiming responsibility. Islamic Jihad also praised the shooting without formally claiming it.
The ambulance service identified the victims as a 50-year-old man, a woman in her fifties, and three men in their thirties. In addition, 11 other people were injured, six of whom are in serious condition with gunshot wounds.

Police stated that the attackers arrived by car and opened fire at the Ramot Junction bus stop. A security officer and a civilian returned fire and killed the assailants. Authorities recovered several weapons, ammunition, and a knife used by the attackers, who police described as ‘terrorists.’
Ramot Junction is located in a part of Jerusalem captured by Israel during the 1967 war and later annexed, a move not recognized by the United Nations and most countries.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that he held a ‘situation assessment’ with security officials following the attack. Video footages show heavy police presence in the Ramot area. Paramedic Fadi Dekaidek, arriving at the scene, said that, “This was a very severe scene,” noting that several victims were lying on the road and sidewalk, some unconscious.
The Israeli military reported that it deployed soldiers to assist police and aid in the search for suspects. Soldiers were also operating in areas of Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank to conduct interrogations and ‘thwart terrorism.’
