Japan marks 1 year since assassination of former Prime Minister Abe

The sombre occasion prompted people from all walks of life to gather outside Tokyo's Zojoji Buddhist temple, forming a long queue to offer flowers before framed pictures of Mr. Abe.

Japan: Japan commemorated the one-year anniversary of the shocking assassination of former Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe, who was the country’s longest-serving leader and a prominent political figure. Mr. Abe was fatally shot in broad daylight while delivering a campaign speech in western Japan.

The assailant, Mr. Tetsuya Yamagami, was immediately apprehended and allegedly targeted Abe due to his perceived connections to the Unification Church. Mr. Yamagami, driven by resentment over his family’s financial troubles caused by his mother’s large donations to the sect, is believed to have used a homemade weapon.

Gun violence is highly uncommon in Japan, which has strict gun control laws. The sombre occasion prompted people from all walks of life to gather outside Tokyo’s Zojoji Buddhist temple, forming a long queue to offer flowers before framed pictures of Mr. Abe. Mourners praised Mr. Abe as an iconic figure who deeply influenced Japanese society through his communication style, public statements, and behaviour. The assassination of Mr. Abe had a significant impact domestically, bringing political upheaval in its wake.

The incident led to renewed scrutiny of the Unification Church, revealing extensive ties between the conservative lawmakers in Japan and the sect, often referred to as the “Moonies.” Prime Minister Mr. Fumio Kishida, whose approval ratings plummeted as these revelations emerged, was compelled to investigate the connections and subsequently announced that his party would sever all relations with the church.

Mr. Abe’s murder also prompted introspection regarding Japan’s security arrangements, with a commitment to enhancing the protection of politicians. Less than a year later, Mr. Kishida himself was targeted in an attack during a campaign event when an individual approached him and threw a homemade explosive. Fortunately, the prime minister remained unharmed, and the assailant was apprehended at the scene.

The assassination of Mr. Shinzo Abe not only drew condolences from global leaders who had engaged with him during his tenure but also sparked significant political repercussions within Japan, leading to revelations about the Unification Church’s influence and a reevaluation of security measures for politicians. The country marked the anniversary with sombre remembrance and contemplation of Abe’s lasting impact on Japanese society and politics.
