Los Angeles: James Van Der Beek has died aged 48 after a diagnosis of bowel cancer, with family members confirming that the actor passed peacefully. The news has marked the passing of a prominent television figure known for roles in teen drama and film.

James Van Der Beek became widely recognised for portraying Dawson Leery in the television series Dawson’s Creek, which ran from 1998 to 2003 and helped define youth programming of the era. The actor also appeared in films including Varsity Blues and later took on roles across television and streaming platforms, maintaining a steady presence in the entertainment industry.

The diagnosis of bowel cancer had been confirmed by Van Der Beek in 2024, though the condition was first identified in the latter half of 2023. Medical testing had revealed stage three disease, meaning the cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes. During treatment, Van Der Beek continued to work and participate in public events, including a virtual appearance at a charity reunion connected to Dawson’s Creek.

Health awareness became a focus during this period. James Van Der Beek spoke about screening and early detection, noting the importance of recognising symptoms and seeking medical tests. The actor had also supported campaigns aimed at encouraging timely diagnosis and treatment.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, Van Der Beek appeared in a range of television projects, including comedic and dramatic roles. Appearances included a fictionalised version of the actor in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and participation in the US programme Dancing with the Stars. Guest roles and recent appearances continued even during the period of illness.

James Van Der Beek is survived by family members and children, with tributes reflecting a career defined by television success and later advocacy for health awareness. The passing has prompted reflection on a performer whose work shaped late-1990s and early-2000s television culture.
