China: Italian orienteer Mattia Debertolis has died after collapsing during a competition at the World Games in Chengdu, China, officials confirmed.
The competitor was found unconscious during the middle-distance final on August 8 and passed away four days later despite receiving emergency medical treatment at one of China’s top hospitals.
The incident occurred during challenging conditions, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius at the competition venue. Debertolis was one of twelve athletes listed as ‘Did Not Finish’ in the official results. The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) expressed profound grief over the loss, with President Tom Hollowell stating the tragedy was beyond words.

Debertolis had been an accomplished member of Italy’s national orienteering team, having placed fifth in the 2022 World Cup final. Beyond athletics, Debertolis was a qualified civil engineer pursuing a PhD at a Stockholm university while residing in Sweden. The sudden death has sent shockwaves through the international orienteering community.
Orienteering combines cross-country running with advanced navigation skills, requiring athletes to locate checkpoints across unfamiliar outdoor terrain using only a map and compass. The sport has been part of the World Games since 2001, serving as the premier global event for non-Olympic disciplines held every four years.
World Games organizers have pledged full support to Italian orienteer Mattia Debertolis’ family and the orienteering community during this difficult time. While the exact cause of death remains undetermined, the tragedy has raised questions about athlete safety in extreme weather conditions. The Italian Olympic Committee has also expressed condolences, remembering Debertolis as both a talented athlete and scholar.
