Seattle: Alaska Airlines has grounded all its flights due to a major IT outage, the airline confirmed. The disruption began around 8 pm Pacific Time on July 20 (4 am July 21 UK time), affecting operations across its network.
The airline did not provide specific details about the cause of the outage but confirmed the suspension of flights. “We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska and Horizon Air flights until the issue is resolved,” said the Seattle-based airline in an official statement.
Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines’ regional subsidiary, was also impacted by the outage, as it operates a large portion of the parent company’s flights.

As of 11 p.m. Pacific, the ground stop has been lifted, and our operations have resumed.

Alaska Airlines apologised for the disruption and issued a warning that there would be “residual impacts to our operation throughout the evening.” The airline advised passengers to “Please check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport.”
According to its website, Alaska Air Group, the parent company, operates a fleet of 238 Boeing 737 aircraft and 87 Embraer 175 aircraft, servicing routes throughout the United States and beyond.
In a related development, Hawaiian Airlines, which is also owned by Alaska Air Group, experienced an IT disruption in June caused by a cyberattack. The company confirmed that some of its systems were impacted and stated it was still determining the financial impact of that incident.
The outage and flight groundings of Alaska Airlines mark the latest challenge for Alaska Air Group, as the aviation industry continues to grapple with technology vulnerabilities and operational disruptions.
