London: International Yoga Day UK has witnessed a remarkable show of unity and wellness as hundreds gathered in London’s iconic Strand Square for an evening of yoga, breathing exercises and mindfulness, led by expert instructors and dignitaries.
King Charles III, known for his deep respect for yoga, sent a special message marking the International Yoga Day UK, praising its role in promoting unity, compassion and global well-being. The monarch highlighted that, ‘Yoga is growing year on year across the United Kingdom, helping millions improve their physical and mental health and bringing communities together.’
The event, hosted by the High Commission of India in London, celebrated the 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day on June 21, reflecting a decade since the UN adopted the resolution proposed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami opened the celebration by reading the King’s heartfelt message from Buckingham Palace, reinforcing how yoga supports the theme ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health.’

High Commissioner Doraiswami noted that yoga’s universal language bridges cultures and people, providing healing regardless of origin, language or faith. He emphasized how the practice speaks to the commonality of the human experience, aligning perfectly with the UAE’s global mission of tolerance and harmony.
This year’s International Yoga Day UK program was organized in partnership with King’s College London. Graham Lord, Senior Vice-President for Health and Life Sciences at King’s College, shared how the institution values wellness and community, aligning with yoga’s core philosophy. He praised the growing ties between India and the UK, strengthened further by cultural exchanges like Yoga Day.
The celebration featured a vibrant opening with a ‘Drums of India’ performance by Bhavan UK, followed by Surya Namaskar and an introduction to Iyengar Yoga. Experts from Heartfulness UK, Art of Living and Isha Foundation guided the crowd through breathing techniques and meditation, concluding with ‘Samagam,’ a harmonious blend of yoga and dance.
Each year, the High Commission of India hosts International Yoga Day UK to unite people from diverse backgrounds, highlighting yoga’s timeless message of balance, wellness and peace.
