Jakarta: Indonesia has been considering the purchase of four additional Airbus A400M military transport aircraft as part of a broader effort to upgrade its ageing defence fleet.
President Prabowo Subianto has stated that negotiations may begin soon to finalise the deal, following the arrival of the first of two new A400M planes at a Jakarta air force base.
The aircraft is part of an agreement signed in 2021 during Prabowo’s tenure as Defence Minister. Airbus confirmed that the second A400M is scheduled to arrive next year. The A400M, a large airlifter developed by Airbus, is capable of carrying heavy cargo such as fuel trucks, excavators, food, clothing, and medical supplies. The aircraft can also operate on short or damaged runways, making it suitable for disaster response operations.
Prabowo has stated that the A400M will significantly enhance Indonesia’s ability to conduct humanitarian and relief missions, including potential assistance in Gaza. As a member of the global community, Indonesia aims to extend support to nations in crisis.

Since assuming leadership, Prabowo has advanced several major defence procurement deals, including new fighter jets and submarines, to strengthen Indonesia’s military readiness. Additionally, the administration has broadened the military’s domestic role in governance, particularly in agriculture, healthcare, and social welfare initiatives, including a national free meals programme.
This latest potential deal aligns with Indonesia’s long-term goal of bolstering regional defence cooperation and maintaining readiness for both national and international missions.
As the government focuses on improving disaster response, humanitarian aid delivery, and national security, the A400M is expected to play a central role in both military and civilian operations.
The move also aligns with Jakarta’s broader strategy of building a self-reliant defence ecosystem, reducing dependence on ageing fleets, and positioning Indonesia as a key player in Southeast Asia’s defence landscape.
