Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Mr. Woody Allen has told a Spanish publication that his next movie is intended to be the last and that he will focus more on writing as the director wants to work on a novel.
The 50th and final film, which as per Mr. Allen, will be shot in France later this year, is expected to be similar to the 2005 thriller Match Point.
“My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing,” Mr. Allen, 86, told the media.
In recent years, Mr. Allen has been in the news for sexual assault allegations made by his ex-partner, Ms. Mia Farrow, who accused the veteran filmmaker of sexually abusing their child. While Mr. Allen denied these claims, he was blacklisted by many and has been denied support in the US. The situation is yet another reason why Mr. Allen chose to shoot his recent films entirely in Europe.
Mr. Allen’s 2019 film A Rainy Day in New York was dropped by Amazon in 2018 following a resurgence of sexual assault allegations during the Me Too movement. Amazon accused Mr. Allen of destabilizing the film with comments about the allegations. Mr. Allen sued Amazon for $68 million, however, the parties settled the dispute amicably.
Set in Paris, Mr. Allen’s final film will be shot entirely in French within two weeks. The director described the upcoming film to be “exciting, dramatic and sinister”.
“I’ll probably make at least one more movie, but a lot of the thrill is gone because it doesn’t have the whole cinema effect,” Mr. Allen mentioned during the chat.
Mr. Allen has been nominated 16 times for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. The director has won four Academy Awards, two for Annie Hall (1977), one for Hannah and Her Sisters (1987), and one for Midnight in Paris (2012).
