Sonora: An explosion at a Waldo’s supermarket in Hermosillo, in the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora, has left at least 23 people dead, including children, and injured at least 11 others, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred as families across Mexico were marking the Day of the Dead. The front of the supermarket was left charred by fire, windows blown out, and nearby businesses shut their doors to prevent the flames from spreading.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed that several of the victims were minors and said the injured were being treated in hospitals in Hermosillo. In a video statement, Durazo announced that an extensive, transparent investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the explosion and identify any possible responsibility.
Durazo added that emergency, health and security services responded quickly and professionally to control the situation and save lives, assuring that no one affected would face this tragedy alone. Local public security authorities have ruled out the possibility of an attack or any violent act behind the explosion.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and said she is in contact with Governor Durazo to provide federal assistance. Claudia Sheinbaum also instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to send a support team to help the injured and the families of those who died.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community at a time traditionally dedicated to remembering and honouring the dead, turning a national celebration into a moment of grief and mourning for many families in Sonora and across the country.
