Tokyo: The designer who helped turn Hello Kitty into a global icon is stepping down after 46 years in the role. Yuko Yamaguchi, who took over creative leadership in 1980, five years after the character first launched, will pass responsibilities to a new generation of designers.
Although widely perceived as a cat, Hello Kitty is officially described as a little girl from London. The character first appeared in 1975 on a small coin purse and quickly became popular in Japan before expanding internationally.
During Yamaguchi’s four-decade tenure, the brand grew into one of the most lucrative franchises in the world. In a statement, Sanrio said that Yamaguchi had “passed the baton to the next generation” and thanked her for helping shape Hello Kitty into a character loved globally.
Now aged 70, Yamaguchi will remain with the company in an advisory capacity to offer support and guidance. Sanrio confirmed that another designer, known by the pseudonym ‘Aya,’ has already been working alongside Yamaguchi and will formally take over the role by the end of 2026.
Hello Kitty’s rise coincided with the growing global popularity of Japan’s ‘kawaii’ culture, a hyper-feminine, girlish aesthetic. Yamaguchi herself often embraced the style publicly, wearing Kitty-inspired dresses and styling her hair in buns reminiscent of the character.

Over the years, Hello Kitty has appeared on a vast range of products including clothes, accessories and video games. The designer has even featured on an Airbus aircraft.
The brand has partnered with organisations and companies such as UNICEF, Nintendo and Balenciaga. Yamaguchi has also appeared as a float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. There are Hello Kitty cafés operating around the world, a theme park in Japan, and another theme park is scheduled to open in China.
Unlike other Japanese exports such as Pokémon, Hello Kitty has relatively little narrative backstory. Sanrio has stated that she “isn’t a human, [but] she’s not quite a cat either.” According to the company, she was born in London, has a twin sister named Mimmy and a boyfriend named Dear Daniel.
Looking ahead, Hello Kitty is set to make her cinematic debut in a film produced by Warner Bros. in 2028. Although she has appeared in several animated series before, she has never spoken, as the character notably does not have a mouth.
