California: Google has introduced a major update to its search engine by embedding an advanced AI Chatbot Mode into its core system. The new Google AI Mode offers users a conversational experience directly within Google Search, transforming how information is accessed online.
The new Google AI Mode feature was rolled out in the United States and is now available as an option directly in the Google search bar. The announcement came during Google’s annual developers conference in Mountain View, California.
The AI Mode update marks a strategic shift for the tech giant, as it faces increasing pressure from rivals such as ChatGPT and other AI-driven platforms that threaten its dominance in web search.
Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, described that the integration of its Gemini chatbot as a turning point. He added that, “With more advanced reasoning, you can ask AI both longer and more complex queries.”
The Google AI Mode feature is designed to mimic a conversation with an expert, making online searches more efficient and interactive. By embedding the AI chatbot in Google search, the company aims to reduce the number of web pages users need to browse, delivering faster, more accurate answers.
The firm also revealed plans to develop augmented reality (AR) glasses in collaboration with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. These glasses will include a camera, microphone, and speakers. Google hopes to compete with Meta’s AI-powered glasses created in partnership with Ray-Ban. The company expects to begin building the glasses later this year. This follows an earlier attempt over a decade ago with Google Glass, which failed to gain market traction.

Leo Gebbie, principal analyst and director for the Americas at CCS Insight, said the move was anticipated. He added that for the end user, this should mean less time spent browsing the web itself and more time spent talking with Google’s AI tools. Gebbie also highlighted that any change in Google Search is highly significant, given the service’s contribution to the company’s revenue.
However, some analysts warned of potential downsides. Cory Johnson, chief market strategist at Epistrophy Capital Research, said that, “Google is getting more efficient at answering questions, but less efficient at generating clicks and clicks is how they get paid.”
The company’s focus on AI comes as it faces legal scrutiny in the US over its control of the search market. A judge has already ruled that Google holds a monopoly in this space, prompting concerns about possible business model changes.
Despite this, Google’s AI products continue to expand rapidly. Mr Pichai shared that “AI Overviews now gets 1.5 billion uses per month in more than 200 countries and territories.”He added that In its biggest markets , the US and India – AI Overviews drive more than 10 percent of growth in the types of queries that show them.
Sundar Pichai further noted that it’s one of the most successful launches in search in the past decade. With Google AI Mode in search, the company has signalled its intent to lead the next era of intelligent and interactive search.
