United States: Hollywood gears up for the much anticipated Golden Globes 2024. The event marks a major ceremony in the award season that ends with The Oscars in March 2024.
This year, movies that gained box office success including Barbie and The Oppenheimer share the nomination list with Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Past Lives, May December, Anatomy of a Fall, and Maestro.
Barbie, with the most number of nominations, is followed by Christopher Nolan’s The Oppenheimer and The Killers of the Flower Moon. Emma Stone, Sandra Hüller, Lily Gladstone and Carey Mulligan are among the nominees in the two best actress categories, split as drama and musical and comedy. Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper were recognized across the two best actor categories.
The CBS network will broadcast the award in the United States. Paramount+ will stream the event worldwide. The ceremony will be held on 8 January 2024, starting at 01:00 GMT (6:30 am IST) which usually lasts for three to four hours. The event will be broadcast from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
US comedian and actor Jo Koy will host the ceremony this year. The 52-year-old host has previously presented specials for Comedy Central and Netflix. Jo Koy has acted in Haunted Mansion and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. Jo Koy stated that “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special.
The new cinematic and box office achievement category will feature Eight of the year’s highest-earning, most acclaimed or most-watched films. The introduction of this category is seen as an attempt to ensure recognition for box office smashes like Barbie and Oppenheimer, but it’s also a way for the Globes to bring in different types of movies and invite more celebrities to the ceremony.
The Eras Tour, a concert film by Taylor Swift, has been nominated. The nominations for the latest John Wick, Mission: Impossible and Guardians of the Galaxy movies ensure the inclusion of mainstream movies which usually never happens during the award seasons. Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes were nominated in the new category, best stand-up comedian on television.
The Golden Globes are traditionally a more light-hearted event than many of the other ceremonies in film awards season. The event happening in the first week of January marks a new beginning for the new year in a good mood. A win in the Golden Globes can set the momentum for the year.
