Germany: Two German-Russian citizens have been captured in southern Germany on a hunch for planning sabotage attacks, including on US army facilities. The foray was intended to vandalise military support for Ukraine.
The individuals, identified as Dieter S and Alexander J, are believed to be working as Russian spies on behalf of the Kremlin. The prosecutor’s office did not confirm the foreign secret service they were working for. The suspects were arrested in the city of Bayreuth, which is known for hosting the annual Richard Wagner opera festival. It is a severe issue that raises concerns about foreign interference and espionage in Germany.
Reports indicate that Dieter S was in touch with a fellow of the Russian secret services since October 2023. The prosecutors stated that he was arrested for plotting to induce an explosive invasion and arson, acting as an agent for sabotage purposes and security-endangering collection of intelligence on military installations.
Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s foreign minister, remarked that, “The suspicion that Putin is recruiting agents from us to carry out attacks on German soil is extremely serious. We will not allow Putin to bring his terror to Germany.” She took swift action against Russia in response to a suspected plot linked to the Kremlin.
The authorities seem to hold clear evidence of the connection, as she already called the Russian ambassador, Sergei Nechayev. Meanwhile, the Kremlin denies any knowledge of the possibilities surrounding the arrests of the two suspects.
According to prosecutors, one of the suspects, Dieter, expressed his willingness to carry out cataclysmic and arson raids on army infrastructure and industrial sites. The intention behind these attacks was to sabotage Germany’s military backing for Ukraine against a Russian invasion.
The US military site Grafenwöhr in Bavaria was the central point for Dieter. He is suspected of functioning as a fighter for an armed unit of the ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’ in eastern Ukraine between December 2014 and September 2016 and obtained a handgun for this intention. Alexander, a German-Russian citizen, is suspected of helping Dieter S from March 2024 and is also charged with spying on behalf of a foreign service.
Germany’s interior minister, Nancy Faeser, responded to the reports that, “Our security authorities have prevented potential explosive attacks intended to strike at and undermine our military help for Ukraine. Germany would not be cowed by the attacks. We will continue to hugely support Ukraine and will not let ourselves be intimidated.”
Marco Buschmann, German Justice Minister, hailed the detentions as a successful inquiry in the fight against Putin’s spy network and sabotage. Buschmann said that, “We know that the Russian power apparatus also has our country in its sights. We must reaction to this threat defensively and determinedly.”
