Borgo Egnazia (Italy): The G7 countries have committed to promoting the ‘India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor’ (IMEEEC), providing a significant boost to the strategic initiative. This comes amidst ongoing tensions in West Asia, which have potentially delayed progress on the project.
During the G7 meeting, which included special invitees such as India, Brazil, Argentina, UAE, and Turkey, the Indian government confirmed it has commenced work on its part of the initiative. Announced during the G20 Leaders Summit in Delhi last year, IMEEEC aims to establish rail links in Saudi Arabia and other participating countries.
The G7 also expressed support for other key initiatives like the Lobito Corridor in Central Africa, the Luzon Corridor, and the Middle Corridor. IMEEEC plans to connect ports on India’s west coast to the UAE, from where goods will be transported by rail to Europe, potentially improving access to the African continent.
Experts suggest that IMEEEC could help mitigate disruptions caused by tensions around the Red Sea, facilitating smoother and quicker movement of goods to Europe. Houthi attacks in the region have caused significant delays, forcing ships to take longer routes and delaying shipments by over 30 days.
The G7 members condemned these attacks, calling for an end to illegal activities and the immediate release of the Galaxy Leader vessel and its crew. The communiqué issued at the end of the meeting in Apulia, Italy, reiterated the right of countries to defend their vessels in accordance with international law, emphasising the risks posed by continuing Houthi attacks on regional stability, freedom of navigation, and trade flows.
