Japan: G7 leaders are convening in Hiroshima, Japan, to discuss pressing global issues, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine taking center stage. Ahead of the summit’s opening, a US official revealed that the G7 group of major economies is poised to unveil additional sanctions and export controls aimed at Russia. These measures are intended to demonstrate the world powers’ unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine and exerting pressure on Moscow.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the gathering, the US official outlined the objectives behind the G7’s latest efforts. These include disrupting Russia’s access to essential materials for the battlefield, closing loopholes exploited to evade sanctions, diminishing global reliance on Russian energy, and limiting Moscow’s entry into the international financial system.
“Our commitment to tightening the screws on Russia remains resolute, mirroring our determination from last year,” the official emphasized.
Since the start of the invasion in February 2022, the United States, the European Union, and Britain, along with their allies, have been steadily intensifying sanctions and export-control measures against Russia.
In the lead up to the summit, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Mr. Rishi Sunak, announced a ban on imports of Russian-origin copper, nickel, and aluminum. It is anticipated that other G7 members will follow suit. Sunak also disclosed additional sanctions targeting 86 individuals and companies associated with Vladimir Putin, further expanding the UK’s sanctions list to over 1,500 entries.
Ukrainian President Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to address the summit via video link over the weekend. Speculation surrounding a potential last-minute, in-person appearance by Mr. Zelenskiy was put to rest by Japan’s government, which confirmed the address would be conducted remotely.
