Washington DC: Harris campaign welcomes Richard Bruce Cheney aka Dick Cheney’s support backed by the confirmation of his vote for the Democrats’ Kamala Harris in November’s presidential election. Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon stated that Vice President Harris is proud to have the support of former Vice President Cheney and deeply respects his courage to prioritize the country over party.

Cheney’s backing of Harris adds him to a growing number of Republicans who have voiced concerns about the candidacy of former President Donald Trump. The former vice president’s endorsement aligns with the stance of his daughter, Liz Cheney, who has already publicly supported Vice President Harris. Liz Cheney was a key member of the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots and was among the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in the wake of the attack.

Liz Cheney’s decision to oppose Trump in the impeachment vote cost her politically.  She lost her congressional seat in 2022 to a Trump-backed challenger. Following Dick Cheney’s endorsement, Trump took to social media, dismissing the former vice president as an “irrelevant RINO” (Republican in name only) and labeling him the “King of Endless, Nonsensical Wars,” a reference to Cheney’s prominent role in the Iraq War during his time in office.

This exchange highlights the increasing divisions within the Republican Party as it navigates the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. Cheney’s endorsement and Trump’s reaction illustrate the deep ideological rifts and ongoing tensions within the party.
