Georgia: At least seven people have died after a section of the ferry dock collapsed on Sapelo Island, Georgia, according to local authorities. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which operates the dock, said the collapse occurred around 4:30 PM local time, sending at least 20 people dropping into the water.
The event took place at Marsh Landing Dock during a cultural celebration on the island. Rescue teams are actively searching for survivors, and several people have been moved to nearby hospitals for treatment.
US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences, grieving the loss of life and extending prayers for the injured and those still missing. Biden stated that, “Our hearts are with the people of Sapelo Island. We stand ready to provide any assistance to the community.”
The cause of the collapse remains unclear, though an investigation is underway. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Representative Buddy Carter have both engaged state resources to aid in the search, rescue, and recovery operations. Kemp described the event as “heartbreaking” and requested prayers for those affected.
The cultural celebration on the island, which honours the Gullah-Geechee community of Hogg Hummock, was planned to be a joyful event. Hogg Hummock, founded by descendants of formerly enslaved individuals after the US Civil War, remains home to a small community of Black residents. The president highlighted the deep cultural importance of the event, which “should have been a joyous celebration of Gullah-Geechee culture and history.” Sapelo Island, a secluded community, is accessible only by boat.
