New Delhi: An explosion near the Red Fort monument in Delhi has killed at least eight people and injured nineteen others, according to Delhi Police. The blast, which occurred shortly before 7 pm on November 10 has prompted a large-scale investigation into its cause and motive.
Police officials said that a slow-moving car stopped at a traffic signal outside the Red Fort metro station moments before the explosion. The blast caused nearby vehicles to catch fire and damaged several others parked along the road. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said that an investigation has been launched to determine whether the incident was accidental or deliberate.
Dozens of fire engines and ambulances have rushed to the scene, working through heavy traffic in the congested Old Delhi area. Footage aired on Indian news channels showed charred vehicles, twisted metal, and emergency workers pulling victims from wreckage. Several motorcycles and auto-rickshaws were also destroyed in the fire that followed the explosion.

Eyewitness Om Prakash Gupta, who lives near the site, said that the explosion was loud enough to shake nearby buildings. Gupta added that several vehicles caught fire and body parts were seen scattered across the road. Another witness, a cab driver identified as Shahrukh, said that people began running in panic after the explosion.
Delhi Police confirmed that at least eight people have died and twenty others have been hospitalised with burns and injuries. The fire department said that nineteen of the injured were admitted to a government hospital, with several in critical condition.
Authorities have detained the registered owner of the car involved in the incident for questioning. Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah said that it was too early to determine the cause of the blast until forensic samples from the site were analysed. Minister added that all possible angles were being investigated and that no lead would be ruled out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Modi said that the authorities are assisting those affected and that the situation is being closely monitored.
Security alerts have been issued across major Indian cities, including Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh, which borders Delhi. The Red Fort area, one of India’s busiest heritage zones and a popular tourist attraction, has been cordoned off while bomb squads and forensic teams examine the site.
The 17th-century Red Fort is a Mughal-era monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The prime minister delivers his annual Independence Day address from its ramparts. Delhi has witnessed explosions in the past, including a 2011 blast outside the High Court that killed twelve people.
