New York: Eric Adams, New York City Mayor, has addressed the protests at Columbia University, in which he rebuked hate speech and anti-Semitism. Adams expressed his horror and disgust at the antisemitism being erupted on and around the University campus.
The protests, which is going on for five days, are a result of the Israel-Hamas warfare and led to the detention of over 100 individuals according to police. “I have instructed the NYPD to investigate any violation of the law that is reported. Rest assured, the NYPD will not hesitate to arrest anyone who is found to be breaking the law,” the mayor said.
Adams cited several instances of hate speech, including a young woman carrying a sign directing Jewish pupils to ‘Al-Qasam’s Next Targets,’ another lady screaming ‘We are Hamas,’ and groups of pupils vocalising ‘We don’t want any Zionists here.’ The Mayor strongly reprimanded these hate speeches.
Cas Holloway, Columbia’s Chief Operating Officer, declared in a post on the university website that the academy was raising ‘safety measures’ on the Morningside campus.Holloway expressed concern regarding the large masses assembling on campus and around the Morningside girth, recognising that they are driving significant trouble and misery.
The academy will be taking actions to manage the crisis, including expanding protection by adding 35 extra guards and two more supervisors per shift. Additionally, there will be an enhanced perimeter guard staffed by extra private security personnel and additional coverage at the Kraft Center during Passover.
Mayor Adams conveyed that demonstrators occupied Columbia’s south grounds for over 30 hours in breach of the university’s regulations and did not leave despite multiple warnings. Recently officials were reported that the New York Police Department arrested a total of 108 people on charges of trespassing. Out of these, two were also charged with obstacles of governmental management.
The rallies formed in April after Columbia University president, Minouche Shafik, vowed to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce about the matter of antisemitism on university campuses. In response, New York Representative, Elise Stefanik, was summoned for Shafik’s concession, blaming Columbia University for failing to implement their campus laws and defend Jewish pupils. Stefanik made this announcement on X.
