Chicago: President Joe Biden received a rousing ovation at the Democratic National Convention as he delivered his final address, officially endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the party in the 2024 presidential election. Biden’s decision to step aside after 52 years in politics has reinvigorated his party, with Harris now positioned to face Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
Biden, 81, was met with a prolonged standing ovation, acknowledging the crowd with a heartfelt “America, I love you.” He passionately defended his record, praised Harris, and criticised Trump, reflecting on the challenges and achievements of his presidency. He reiterated his belief that the country is in a “battle for the very soul of America” and expressed confidence in Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, to lead that fight.
Harris joined Biden on stage, thanking him for his leadership and lifetime of service. “We are forever grateful to you,” she said, as the convention set the stage for a new chapter in the Democratic Party’s history.
Biden’s speech highlighted key accomplishments from his administration, such as increased infrastructure spending and capping insulin prices. He emphasised that these benefits extended across the nation, regardless of political affiliation. The president also touched on his decision to run for office in 2020, driven by the need to combat the rise of extremism, and he credited Harris for her role in the administration’s successes.
The event marked a significant moment of unity for the Democratic Party, which had been divided over Biden’s potential reelection bid. Many had urged him to step aside, citing concerns about his age and debate performance against Trump. However, Biden assured the crowd that he harboured no ill will toward those who had pushed for his exit and called for unity around Harris.
First Lady Jill Biden spoke emotionally about her husband’s decision to end his campaign, praising his commitment to the nation. The convention also featured prominent Democrats, including Delaware Senator Chris Coons and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who praised Biden’s leadership and Harris’ potential to break the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” as America’s first female president.
The convention also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsing Harris and highlighting her efforts to secure a ceasefire and bring hostages home. Biden acknowledged the protests both outside and inside the arena, calling for an end to the violence and reiterating his push for a ceasefire.
As the Democrats looked ahead to the 2024 election, they kept the focus on Trump, criticising his policies and legal troubles. Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow underscored the stakes by highlighting “Project 2025,” a conservative blueprint for a potential second Trump term.
The convention also maintained a strong emphasis on abortion rights, an issue Democrats believe will be crucial in the upcoming election, particularly after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
With Biden’s endorsement, the Democratic Party is now fully behind Kamala Harris as she prepares to take on Donald Trump in what is expected to be a contentious and closely watched election.
