Eastern Alberta witnessed an alarming emergency situation on Tuesday afternoon as a fire broke out at an oil lease site, situated 23 kilometres southeast of Mannville, near Range Road 82 and Township Road 480 in Minburn County. The incident triggered an emergency air quality alert due to the release of toxic smoke, posing a significant health hazard to residents in the vicinity.

The fire, which quickly escalated out of control, resulted in the burning of crude oil, emitting dangerous smoke harmful when inhaled. The Alberta Emergency Alert system promptly issued a warning to the public, stressing the seriousness of the situation.

In response to this urgent crisis, Minburn County officials posted an update on the county’s website, informing residents of the ongoing emergency operations. Firefighting teams from Wainwright, Irma, Vermilion, Paradise Valley, and nearby communities were mobilised to tackle the blaze.

The county’s statement highlighted the efforts of first responders and firefighting crews who were actively working to contain and extinguish the fire. The public was urged to avoid the affected area, allowing emergency services to operate efficiently and safely.

The emergency alert specifically targeted everyone in the area bounded by Highway 41 and Highway 870; south of Vermillion or Innisfree, and north of Wainwright. Residents were advised to shelter in place immediately, to remain indoors, and to close all windows and doors as a precautionary measure. Although no evacuation was mandated, people were advised to be prepared for any eventuality.

Fortunately, approximately two hours after the alert was issued, an update confirmed that the emergency crews had successfully brought the fire under control. The update reassured the public that the toxic smoke was no longer being released into the air, thereby cancelling the previously issued emergency alert.
