United States: The social media site X, which was previously known as Twitter, has changed its policy to officially permit pornographic content. As long as the content is consensual and properly labelled, users will be able to publish sexualized images on the platform.
“Users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed,” reads the modified policy, which was changed over the weekend. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression,” it said.
“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality,” X shared.
According to the policy, users will not be permitted to share information that “promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours.” Children and adult users who opt not to see graphic material will only be exposed to limited amounts.
The move, which was originally noted by TechCrunch, formalizes a more accepting stance toward sexual content that existed before Musk bought Twitter in October 2022.
In contrast to social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, Twitter has never explicitly prohibited sexualized or nude content.
Under Musk’s leadership, X has significantly reduced platform moderation and brought back accounts that had been banned, such as conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and former US President Donald Trump.
Musk has maintained that he is defending the right to free speech, but detractors have charged the CEO of Tesla of promoting false information and hate speech.
