United States: Elon Musk’s task force for streamlining the U.S. government is reportedly seeking access to vast amounts of taxpayer data, sparking fears of privacy violations and potential political retribution.
According to reports, Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are pushing to access the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) protected Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS). This system contains sensitive taxpayer information, including Social Security numbers, home addresses, property records, and salary details.
DOGE had not yet gained access to the system, multiple outlets reported. However, White House spokesperson Harrison Fields defended the move, stating that a direct permit was necessary to uncover “deeply entrenched” government waste, fraud, and abuse.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who fear Musk extends his influence over the federal government without oversight. Senators Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to the IRS, warning that Musk could weaponize the tax system for political purposes.
DOGE is looking for help from the general public!
Please DM insight for reducing waste, fraud, and abuse, along with any helpful insights or awesome ideas, to the relevant DOGE affiliates (found on the Affiliates tab). For example, @DOGE_USDA, @DOGE_SSA, etc.

The letter read that, “The IRS must immediately announce to the Senate Committee on Finance the full extent of the potential access to IRS systems and data granted to DOGE team members,” adding that any unauthorized access could include criminal violations of federal privacy laws.
Musk appeared to suggest a political motive in a post on his social media platform X. In response to a post claiming he wanted to investigate Democratic Senator Adam Schiff rather than the general public, Musk shared the message with an index finger emoji pointing downward.
Meanwhile, a newly created X account, DOGE IRS, has begun soliciting public input on identifying “waste, fraud, and abuse” within the IRS. The development adds to expanding concerns over Musk’s expanding role in U.S. governance, as critics warn of potential risks to privacy and political neutrality.
