United States: Former US President Donald Trump has been charged with multiple offenses related to the handling of classified documents following his departure from the White House. The charges, which include unauthorized retention of classified files, are the second indictment against Mr. Trump and the first federal indictment of a former president in US history. Although the charges have not been publicly released, legal experts suggest that they will not impede Mr. Trump’s potential campaign for the presidency in 2024.
In a statement on Truth Social, Mr. Trump proclaimed his innocence and revealed that he had been summoned to appear at a federal court in Miami, Florida, where he expects to be arrested and hear the charges against him. The charges reportedly include conspiracy, false statements, obstruction of justice, and illegal retention of classified documents under the Espionage Act.
The Department of Justice has declined to comment on the matter, and the indictment remains undisclosed. An indictment is a document that outlines the specific charges against an individual, ensuring they are aware of the alleged criminal offenses. The Secret Service is coordinating with Mr. Trump’s staff and security officers to plan his journey to the Miami courthouse.
Last year, Mr. Trump’s Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, was searched, resulting in the seizure of approximately 11,000 documents, including around 100 marked as classified, with some designated as top secret. Reports surfaced recently suggesting that prosecutors obtained an audio recording in which Mr. Trump acknowledged retaining a classified document after leaving the White House, a violation of US law.
Despite the indictment, legal experts emphasize that Mr. Trump remains eligible to run for the presidency. David Super, a professor at Georgetown University Law Centre, explains that he can be indicted multiple times without hindering his ability to stand for office. Opinion polls currently place Mr. Trump as the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 White House race.
In response to the news, several prominent Republicans expressed support for Mr. Trump. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Kevin McCarthy, called the indictment “unconscionable,” and vowed that House Republicans would hold those responsible accountable. Florida Governor Mr. Ron DeSantis promised to bring accountability to the Department of Justice if elected. Meanwhile, candidate Mr. Vivek Ramaswamy pledged to pardon Mr. Trump promptly upon assuming office, while Asa Hutchinson emphasized that the alleged actions should not define the nation or the Republican Party.
Separately, an investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, which Mr. Trump lost, is also being conducted under the oversight of former war crimes attorney Mr. Jack Smith. Mr. Trump is currently facing trial in New York next year on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush-money payment to a porn star.
