Washington: A controversy involving Donald Trump has unfolded after a video shared on social media included a racist depiction of former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. The clip appeared at the end of a longer video that contained claims about voter fraud in the 2020 United States presidential election.

Donald Trump has said that only the beginning of the video had been viewed before it was posted by a staff member and that the controversial portion had not been seen in advance. The post remained online for a period before criticism intensified from across the political spectrum, including from members of the Republican Party.

Republican Senator Tim Scott has called for the video to be removed and has described it as the most racist content seen from the White House. Other Republican lawmakers have also criticised the post, with some stating that it should be deleted and accompanied by an apology.

Following the backlash, the video was removed from Trump’s Truth Social account, and a White House official indicated that a staff member had made the post in error. The clip had included caricatures comparing Black public figures to animals, imagery that has long been associated with racist stereotypes.

The video also portrayed other political figures as animals and included references to the 2020 election. Claims related to voting conspiracies in that election had previously been debunked through legal proceedings involving Dominion Voting Systems.

Civil rights leaders and political figures have condemned the video, describing it as offensive and harmful. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has criticised the content and questioned its intent. Additional criticism has continued even after the video was taken down, with some lawmakers stating that it should never have been posted.

Donald Trump has stated that many items are reviewed daily and that the video was removed once the full content became known. The White House has said that the clip originated from an online meme video and has urged critics to focus on other issues affecting the public.

The incident has added to ongoing political tensions and has drawn renewed scrutiny of social media content shared by public officials. Observers have noted that the episode has highlighted questions about oversight and review processes for material posted to high-profile accounts.
