France: Novak Djokovic secured his 23rd Grand Slam title in a stunning victory over Casper Ruud in the French Open final. The Serbian superstar beat his rival Rafael Nadal’s record for the most major singles trophies in men’s tennis history. Nadal, a 14-time champion at Roland Garros, was absent from this year’s tournament due to injury.

This win marked Djokovic’s third French Open title, adding to his victories in 2016 and 2021. He now stands as the sole male player to have won at least three titles in each major event. Since his first Slam win in 2008 at the Australian Open, Djokovic has amassed an impressive record of 10 titles there, seven at Wimbledon, and three at the US Open. He is also halfway to achieving a calendar-year Grand Slam, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by any man since Rod Laver in 1969. Djokovic came close to achieving this in 2021, winning the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, but narrowly missing out on the US Open title.

With 23 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic now shares the record with Margaret Court and Serena Williams in women’s tennis. His sights are now set on surpassing Court’s all-time mark of 24 titles at Wimbledon next month. Despite being the oldest French Open champion, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down. Following his victory, he will reclaim the world number one ranking, marking his 388th week in the top spot.

The prestigious event drew attention from sports celebrities, with NFL legend Tom Brady, football stars Kylian Mbappe and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson among the notable attendees.

Djokovic’s victory was not without its challenges. Ruud initially displayed composure, taking an early lead, but Djokovic fought back, eventually winning the first set in a tiebreak. From there, Ruud seemed fatigued, and Djokovic capitalized, breaking early in the second set. Despite a warning for time violations, Djokovic remained focused and broke again in the final game of the third set to secure his historic win. Novak Djokovic’s 23rd Grand Slam victory is a testament to his incredible talent and determination, further cementing his status as one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
