United States: Entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. recently announced the release dates for the highly anticipated film series, Avatar. The release of Avatar 3 has been delayed by a year, extending its arrival from December 2024 to December 2025.

Avatar 4 is now scheduled for December 2029, while Avatar 5 is slated for its cinematic debut in December 2031. The updates in release dates have sparked curiosity and anticipation among movie enthusiasts, who eagerly await the next captivating chapters of the Avatar saga.

Director James Cameron, who initiated the Avatar series in 2009, has hinted that he may not direct the fourth and fifth films. By December 2031, Cameron would be 77 years old. It’s worth noting that the first two films, Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, have collectively amassed over $5.2 billion at the box office, showcasing their immense popularity.

The decision to postpone the Avatar films is attributed to the studio’s commitment to delivering an exceptional cinematic experience that meets the high standards of both filmmakers and audiences. Jon Landau, the producer of Avatar, expressed on Twitter that each film in the franchise is a monumental endeavor, requiring ample time and effort to reach the desired level of quality.

Disney also made changes to its plans for other major franchises. Two Star Wars films are now in the works for 2026, with one film being rescheduled from December 2025 to May 2026, and an additional film slated for December 2026. Specific details about these untitled productions have yet to be announced.

The Marvel calendar was also reshuffled, with Avengers: Kang Dynasty being postponed from May 2025 to May 2026. This film, featuring actor Jonathan Majors in a prominent role, has faced delays partly due to the actor’s legal situation. Majors was charged with domestic violence in March, and while he has denied the charges, the case is ongoing.

Furthermore, several other Marvel releases have been delayed by a few months. Captain America: Brave New World will now premiere in July 2024 instead of May 2024, followed by Thunderbolts in December 2024, Blade in February 2025, and Fantastic Four in May 2025.

Additionally, a new Alien film from Disney’s 20th Century studio is scheduled for August next year. On a positive note, Deadpool 3 will hit theaters earlier than expected, moving up its release date from November 2024 to May 2024.
