DHL suspends standard parcel shipments to US businesses

Frankfurt: German postal services group DHL (DHLn.DE) has announced that it will suspend the shipment of standard parcels for businesses to the United States, aligning with similar actions by other European postal operators. The move is a response to looming US customs duties on low-value packages.

A DHL spokesperson stated that the company does not reveal the number of parcels potentially affected by the suspension and could not provide a timeline for when services might resume. The restriction, the spokesperson clarified, applies exclusively to DHL’s operations in Germany.

The Trump administration announced last month that it would end the global ‘de minimis’ exemption, which previously allowed minimal paperwork for international shipments under $800, effective August 29, 2025.

Earlier in the week, postal groups in Scandinavia, Austria, and Belgium also stated they would temporarily pause parcel shipments to the US.

    DHL express premium delivery remains

“The reason for these likely temporary restrictions is new processes required by US authorities for postal shipping,” DHL said.

The company confirmed that August 25, 2025, would be the last day it accepts standard business parcel consignments to the United States. However, DHL Express premium delivery services will remain unaffected.

For private customers, DHL stated that gifts worth less than $100 can still be sent as standard parcels to the US, but these shipments will face stricter controls to prevent misuse.

DHL noted that the suspension is expected to be temporary, assuring businesses and individuals that it is closely monitoring developments and will resume standard parcel services to the US once a practical solution to the customs changes is in place.
