New York: The COP29 Presidency led a high-level discussion at UN Headquarters in New York called ‘The Road to COP29: A Multilateral Approach to Climate Adaptation’. The event convened senior government officials, representatives from financial institutions and climate funds, as well as climate experts.

The conversation focused on strengthening global resilience to climate change, especially in the wake of recent climate disasters that highlighted the urgent need for increased funding for adaptation initiatives.

COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11th to 22nd November 2024.

The discussions focused on advancing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), placing particular emphasis on addressing the financial challenges faced by developing countries.

During the event, participants stressed the importance of enhancing international cooperation and increasing financial support for adaptation efforts in vulnerable areas, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). They also highlighted the need to eliminate barriers and adopt innovative solutions to ensure that these regions receive the necessary support for their adaptation strategies.

During the event, COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev emphasized the pressing need to boost adaptation finance and urged nations to demonstrate solidarity in addressing climate challenges.

COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev also underscored the importance of global cooperation and transformative actions to protect countries vulnerable to climate change. He stated that COP29 will play a crucial role in strengthening global climate adaptation efforts for a sustainable future.

As COP29 approaches, the presidency aims to set a robust agenda that prioritizes adaptation alongside mitigation efforts. The outcomes of these discussions will play a vital role in guiding negotiations and policy frameworks at the upcoming climate conference, ensuring that adaptation receives the attention and resources it requires in the global fight against climate change.
