London, UK: The dictionary publisher Collins has chosen “AI” as the word of the year. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was picked because it “has accelerated at such a fast pace and become the dominant conversation of 2023” and the word’s usage has quadrupled this year, the publisher stated.
“We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming, or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology,” the publisher remarked.
The annual word of the year is chosen by lexicographers who track various sources, including social media, as stated by the publisher. “Permacrisis” was the term for the previous year, and “NFT” was the pick in the year before that. In 2020, “lockdown” was unsurprisingly the word of the year.
Collins’s announcement came while UK Prime Minister Mr. Rishi Sunak hosted a summit for 100 world leaders, tech leaders, academics, and AI researchers. In the two day summit, they are discussing ways to harness the benefits of this powerful technology while reducing the associated risks.
Mr. Alex Beecroft, the managing director of Collins, commented that there was no question that AI had been the talking point of 2023.
“We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming, or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology,” Mr. Beecroft observed.
