WASHINGTON: Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican from Mississippi, has blocked legislation protecting the access to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Senator Tammy Duckworth, sponsored a measure that was brought up for consideration by unanimous consent, which meant that a senator could block it from passing. The measure would have provided federal protections for IVF.
According to a recent ruling of the Alabama Supreme Court, embryos created through In Vitro Fertilization are considered to be children. There are concerns among doctors and families that the availability of In Vitro Fertilization might decrease as there is a possibility of people getting sued for destroying embryos. During the IVF process, embryos are frequently discarded if they have genetic defects or if patients determine not to use them.
Duckworth, who had two daughters using IVF, said that, “The Alabama decision paints women like me and our doctors as criminals and throws IVF access into chaos as countless women and doctors try to figure out whether they might be criminalized for simply trying to create a family.” She defined it as a “nightmarish blend of hypocrisy and misogyny.”
“The very people who claim to be defending family values are the ones trying to enact dystopian policies that would prevent Americans from starting their own families,” Duckworth added.
Hyde-Smith stated that, “The Alabama decision did not ban IVF, nor has any state banned IVF. The bill before us today is a vast overreach that is full of poison pills that go way too far, far beyond ensuring legal access to IVF.”
Since the conservative justices of the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Democrats have been politically inclined on the abortion issue, leaving Republicans pro-abortion.
“This has always been about conservative politicians controlling women’s bodies. This has been Donald Trump and the Republicans’ plan all along, and the opposition to Sen. Duckworth’s proposal today shows that Republicans are doubling down against reproductive freedom. They are coming for medication abortion, they are coming for birth control, and they are even coming for prenatal care. Make no mistake,” Senator Elizabeth Warren commented.
