China: China’s Foreign Ministry has reported that Vice Foreign Minister Mr. Sun Weidong has raised objections with South Korea’s ambassador to Beijing regarding comments made by the South Korean president about Taiwan, deeming them to be “erroneous.”
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement claiming that Vice Foreign Minister deemed South Korean President Mr. Yoon Suk-yeol’s recent statements on Taiwan to be “totally unacceptable”, and expressed “strong dissatisfaction” with the South Korean ambassador.
According to the One China policy, China maintains that Taiwan, which is governed democratically, is an integral part of its own territory. However, Taipei firmly rejects this position. China requires that countries that have diplomatic relations with it should also acknowledge that Taiwan is a part of China. Additionally, China has indicated that it may use force to bring Taiwan back under its control.
After facing criticism from China’s Foreign Ministry, Mr. Sun also expressed his complaint about South Korea’s handling of Taiwan-related matters. China had advised South Korea to exercise caution in this regard. In response, Seoul summoned China’s ambassador to lodge a protest against what it deemed to be a “significant diplomatic insult” by Beijing.
In recent years, there has been an escalation of tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with the latest incident being China’s launch of military exercises this month. This move came after Taiwan’s President, Ms. Tsai Ing-wen, paid a visit to the US and met with Mr. Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in California.
