London, UK: UK Prime Minister Mr. Rishi Sunak said that Britain has delayed the ban on new petrol and diesel cars. It signals a significant shift in the government’s strategy to achieve net zero by 2050.
The Prime Minister has revealed changes in important green policies, including exemptions and delays. The PM also mentioned a 50 percent boost in cash incentives for replacing gas boilers.
Mr. Sunak has stated that the government could not impose “unacceptable costs” linked to reducing emissions on British families.
This move has sparked strong criticism from the opposition and certain industry leaders.
Mr. Sunak has faced criticism from members of his own party, but numerous Conservative MPs supported the new approach, as well as some individuals within the car industry.
These changes are occurring as Mr. Sunak aims to establish differences with opposition parties in preparation for an upcoming general election anticipated next year, as per the statement.
In a speech from Downing Street on September 20, 2023, Mr. Sunak mentioned that progressing too rapidly with green policies could lead to a loss of support from the British people.
UK Shadow Environment Secretary Mr. Steve Reed has remarked that without the ban, the UK would fail to achieve its goal of reaching net zero. It is the point where a country stops adding to the total amount of harmful greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, as per the Secretary.
Mr. Reed noted that the Prime Minister had sold out the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century for Britain to lead the world in the transition to well-paid, secured new jobs in the green economy.
