Bolivia: More than 30 people have been killed in a tragic bus crash on a mountainous road in Bolivia, police confirmed. The vehicle plunged nearly 800 metres (2,625 feet) into a ravine in the southwestern district of Yocalla, leaving a scene of devastation.
Authorities reported that 14 people were injured, including four children. Several of them remain in critical condition, according to an official from a local hospital. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to rescue bodies and transport the wounded to nearby medical facilities.
The accident occurred on the highway connecting the cities of Potosí and Oruro, a route known for its hazardous terrain. Preliminary investigations suggest that extreme speed may have played a role in the crash. Police colonel Víctor Benavides said that the driver was “unable” to control the bus, leading to the fatal plunge.

This is considered the deadliest road accident in Bolivia so far this year. The country’s mountainous roads are notorious for their dangers, often aggravated by reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles. Just last month, a similar incident near Potosi claimed 19 lives when another bus turned off the road.
According to government data, Bolivia records an average of 1,400 road fatalities annually in its population of approximately 12 million. Officials continue to highlight the need for stricter safety regulations and enforcement to prevent further tragedies.
Local news reported that authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the crash, while families of the victims demand answers and accountability.
