Washington: President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race for the upcoming US presidential election as the Democratic Party candidate. In a statement shared on X, Biden cited the best interests of the country and the party as his reasons for stepping down, just four months before the election.

“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” -Biden said in his statement.
Calls for Biden to withdraw had been growing after his performance in the first presidential debate against Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump. Biden emphasised his plan to concentrate on his presidential responsibilities for the rest of his term.
Biden praised Kamala Harris, stating that appointing her as Vice President was his best decision. With Biden stepping down, the new candidate will be selected at the Democratic National Convention, beginning on 19 August in Chicago. Harris is widely expected to be the Democratic Party’s candidate.
