United States: Donald Trump has named Scott Bessent, a prominent Wall Street financier and former advisor to George Soros, as his nominee for US Treasury Secretary. The appointment caps a lengthy selection process for one of the administration’s most influential posts, with sweeping responsibilities over tax policy, public debt, international finance, and economic sanctions.
Bessent, 62, has been a vocal advocate of Trump’s America First agenda, pledging to strengthen US competitiveness and implement policies that reduce trade imbalances. Trump wrote in his announcement on Truth Social, mentioning that, “Scott is widely respected as one of the world’s foremost international investors and strategists.” If confirmed by the Senate, Bessent will rule efforts to extend Trump-era tax cuts set to expire next year, a move he claims is critical to avoiding the “largest tax increase in US history.”
Trump’s pick for Treasury was part of a flurry of appointments, solidifying much of his cabinet ahead of his second term. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican congresswoman from Oregon, was appointed for Labour Secretary. Trump described her as a leader who will “grow wages and improve working conditions.” Chavez-DeRemer recently lost her re-election bid, assuring her nomination will not alter the GOP’s narrow majority in the House.
NFL veteran and former Texas lawmaker Scott Turner was tapped to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development, while health-related roles went to Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, as Surgeon General, and Dr. Dave Weldon, as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director. Russell Vought, a key architect of conservative policy goals, was nominated to direct the Office of Management and Budget, a position he previously held during Trump’s first term.
Bessent’s background as an international investor and his moderate stance on economic policy reflects Trump’s strategic pivot at Treasury. While many cabinet selections have favoured loyalty over traditional qualifications, Bessent brings a designated reputation from Wall Street.
Known for his success in the 1990s under Soros, Bessent has also built a career as an investor with a focus on economic policy. He has sincerely supported Trump’s protectionist tariffs as a negotiation tool and is a staunch proponent of cryptocurrencies, a priority for Trump’s administration to designate the US as a global leader in digital assets. His nomination signals an effort to balance populist economic ideas with Wall Street-friendly policies, a dynamic that will likely define his tenure if confirmed.
