London: Baldur’s Gate 3 has won five Bafta Game Awards including the coveted title of best game, making it the most successful game at the 20th ceremony. This role-playing game, based on Dungeons & Dragons, received awards for its music and narrative, as well as an acting award for Andrew Wincott’s portrayal of fan-favourite devil Raphael.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder received two awards, while Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, despite holding six nominations, failed to win any awards. In the meantime, Viewfinder, a photography-based puzzle game, won the award for best British game at the event.
According to the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), gaming sales in the UK were worth £4.7 billion last year, more than twice the amount generated by the music industry.
In 2023, Nintendo’s two major games, ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ and ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder,’ received recognition and won various awards in different categories. However, Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ was nominated nine times but only managed to secure one win.
Standing at the podium surrounded by his colleagues, Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke expressed that, “I still can’t believe we’re standing here. A lot of people put a lot of heart and soul into making Baldur’s Gate 3, so this is amazing – thank you Bafta, thank you everybody.”
The lead writer of the game, Sarah Baylus, expressed her gratitude for winning the award for best narrative, considering it ‘an honour and a privilege.’ The game also won the EE Player’s Choice prize, which was voted for by members of the public. Borislav Slavov, the composer of Baldur’s Gate 3, was overcome with emotion when he received the award for best music, thanking Bafta for ‘this special moment in my life.’
Although it missed out on the main prize, Jaeho Hwang, the game director of Dave the Diver, was elated as his sushi restaurant management game won the award for game design, beating out some big-name rivals. Sad Owl Studios won not only in the British game category but also for having the best new intellectual property.
When they first went up to the podium, they were teary-eyed, but when they returned for their second award, they were more concise and joked that they hadn’t prepared any speeches. They also mentioned that if people wanted more of their game, they would need the financial resources to develop it.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the awards for Best Performer category, which was split into leading and supporting roles five years ago. Actors in modern games have to record their entire body movements to be replicated in-game. Andrew Wincott, the winner of the supporting role award, was surprised to wear a skin-fitting bodysuit for his first performance, which was cut short by a fire alarm.
This year was great for gaming with many blockbuster games, but behind the scenes, the game industry was hit by job cuts. Unity, Microsoft, and Electronic Arts are some of the big names that laid off thousands of staff. While the winners celebrate, it’s important not to forget that many in the industry are unhappy about their employment prospects due to uncertainty. However, the presenters did highlight the quality of the games on show and Jane Douglas called game design an art form.
