United States: Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc has threatened to remove news from its platform if the US Congress passes a new law that would give news organizations greater power to negotiate fees for content shared on Facebook. United Kingdom: Oxford Dictionaries has announced that “goblin mode” has been selected by online vote as the Word of the Year. Oxford defines the term as “a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.” The winning word, “goblin mode” received 318,956 votes, making up 93 percent of the total votes. Saudi Arabia: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced that Saudi Arabia is the only bidder in the run to host the 2027 Asian Cup after India’s federation withdrew its application. Russia: About 2,500 seals have been found dead on the Caspian Sea coast in southern Russia. Regional officials reported that 700 dead seals were found on the coast, but the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment later raised the figure to about 2,500. China: Three Chinese astronauts have landed back on Earth after completing a six-month mission onboard China’s space station. The crew of the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft landed in Inner Mongolia, a Chinese autonomous region. Indonesia: Indonesia’s Semeru volcano on Java island has erupted, spewing a column of ash 1.5 km into the air, forcing authorities to warn residents to stay away from the eruption area.
