United States: Tech giant Apple is planning to adopt a messaging standard that will bring iMessage features to Android users. The new Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard will bring several messaging features, including read receipts, typing indicators, sharing high-quality images and videos, and so on.
RCS can work over mobile data or Wi-Fi. Currently, Android phones and carriers support the RCS messaging standard. The feature is said to reach iPhone models through a software update next year.
RCS operates on both mobile data and Wi-Fi and is currently supported by Android phones and carriers. It’s expected that iPhone models will gain this feature through a software update next year.
“Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users,” quoted by 9to5Mac in its report.
Next year, a software update will introduce the RCS feature to iPhone models, bringing iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users. This will include reading receipts, typing indicators, and the ability to share high-resolution photos and videos across both types of handsets. RCS on iPhones will enable location sharing in texts and the swift operation of group chats, as per the statement.
