United States: Apple co-founder Mr. Steve Wozniak has warned that the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) by “bad actors” could lead to an increase in scams and misinformation. Mr. Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with the late Mr. Steve Jobs and invented the company’s the first computer, also called for regulation in the sector and for AI content to be clearly labelled.
Mr. Wozniak argued that responsibility for programmes generated by AI lies with those who publish them, saying “a human really has to take the responsibility for what is generated by AI.”The co-founder urged regulators to hold big tech firms to account but was sceptical that regulators would get it right. Mr. Wozniak said that while we can’t stop the technology, people could be educated to spot fraud and malicious attempts to steal personal information.
The Apple CEO, Mr. Tim Cook, also recently sounded a note of caution regarding AI, stating that it was important to approach the technology “deliberately and thoughtfully”. Mr. Cook said that while AI was “huge”, it would continue to be woven into Apple’s products in a thoughtful manner.
AI refers to computer systems that are able to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence. OpenAI, a company co-founded by Mr. Elon Musk and now backed by Microsoft, has developed GPT-4, a system that can hold conversations like a human, compose songs, and summarise lengthy documents.
