United States: Alaska Airlines has temporarily grounded all flights across the United States, following a widespread IT outage that disrupted its operations.
In a statement, the Seattle-based carrier said it was experiencing an IT outage affecting operations and had issued ‘a temporary ground stop.’ The airline did not specify how long the disruption would last or how many flights had been impacted, but added that teams were actively restoring our operations.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the outage also affected Horizon Air, a regional airline operated by Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines, part of The Alaska Air Group, operates primarily along the West Coast and serves 140 destinations across 37 US states and 12 countries. Hawaiian Airlines, which merged with Alaska Airlines last year, was not impacted by the disruption.
This marks the second major IT issue to hit the airline this year, a similar outage in July led to a three-hour halt in flights. The incident comes with broader turbulence for US air travel. Flight delays have risen in recent weeks following a partial government shutdown earlier this month, which has led to staffing shortages among air traffic controllers.
Alaska Airlines has yet to issue further details or respond to requests for comment.
The airline said it is continuing to monitor the situation closely and working with aviation authorities to resume normal operations as soon as possible.
