India: Air India has announced plans to dispatch a replacement aircraft to transport stranded passengers from a Delhi-San Francisco flight that made an emergency landing in Russia. The flight, carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members, experienced an engine issue on 6th June 2023, prompting the unscheduled landing at Magadan airport in Russia’s Far East region. The nature of the engine snag has not been disclosed.
In a statement, Air India confirmed its intention to operate a flight from Russia to San Francisco, subject to necessary regulatory clearances. The airline also assured that the ferry flight would carry essential supplies, including food, for the passengers. Due to infrastructural limitations around Magadan airport, passengers had been relocated to makeshift accommodations after attempts were made to arrange stays in local hotels.
Air India acknowledged the absence of its own staff in Magadan or Russia and noted that the Indian Consulate General in Vladivostok, the Ministry of External Affairs, local ground handlers, and Russian authorities were providing support in this unprecedented situation. However, a video shared on Twitter depicted passengers sleeping on mattresses on the floor, sparking criticism of Air India’s service and questioning the lack of better facilities.
The airline had confirmed the safe landing of the diverted flight and stated that the aircraft was undergoing mandatory checks on the ground. The United States expressed its vigilance over the situation, with the State Department Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel, noting that it was likely there were US citizens onboard, although he couldn’t confirm the exact number.
Air India’s prompt response to send a replacement plane aims to resolve the ordeal faced by the stranded passengers, allowing them to continue their journey to San Francisco.
