China: The Biden administration applauded the Pentagon for shooting down a purported Chinese surveillance balloon near the US Atlantic coast but China vehemently expressed its “strong dissatisfaction” with the action and threatened to take “necessary responses.”
The craft spent many days flying over North America before it was shot down by a missile fired from an F-22 off the coast of South Carolina, according to Pentagon officials. The missile caused the aeroplane to crash into relatively shallow water that was only 47 feet (14 metres) deep.
According to US Secretary of Defense Mr. Lloyd Austin, The operation was a “deliberate and lawful action” that came in response to China’s “unacceptable violation of our sovereignty.”
The downing of the “civilian” aircraft, however, was condemned by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as “clearly overreacting” and “seriously breaking international practise” in a statement released.
A senior defence official told reporters that the military’s first opportunity to deflate the balloon “in a way that would not pose a threat to the safety of Americans,” while still enabling officials to recover the scattered debris from US territorial seas.

The balloon looked to collapse in a white puff in a witness video shared on social media before its remains fell vertically into the Atlantic Ocean below. Ms. Haley Walsh, a Twitter user, claimed to have “heard and felt the explosion” at the well-known South Carolina vacation destination of Myrtle Beach.
President Mr. Joe Biden complimented the jet pilots, who he had earlier vowed “to take care” of the balloon. “They successfully took it down. And I want to compliment our aviators who did it,” Mr. Biden remarked.
